SIMPLE WATER CONSERVATION PROJECTS CLOSE TO HOME
Q:What can I do today to help conserve water?
A: Euonymus and Ken's front lawn.
For years, every spring and summer I poured water on a small triangular part
of my front lawn, only to see the grass stay brown and see the water run down
the driveway, into the street and eventually into the sewer. This obviously was
a total waste of water resources!
Also for years, I have trimmed euonymus (a groundcover) in my front yard
which grows heartily without one drop of water from sprinkling. We enjoy the
euonymus for its dark green color and thick ground cover from early spring to
late fall. It grows naturally with little maintenance.
One day the light bulb went on in my head! To conserve water and improve my
local environment, all I had to do was to change my habits and thinking. Why not
forget the futile grass growing exercise each season and plant euonymus instead.
I am glad to report that I have now done this (SEE PICTURE)* My environment
is actually more beautiful now and I estimate a savings of approximately 500
gallons of water a season from this very small change.
The point to my true story is that there are small water conservation
projects in our daily lives which do not affect the quality of our lives but yet
when added together result in staggering amounts of conserved water.
